Description of the workplace

The Alliance Française of Brno is a non-profit organization with two main activities:

As a language school, it provides courses of French language, from beginners to advanced students; organizes exams at a national level and delivers an official degree (DELF, DALF).

As a cultural center, it organizes different cultural activities during the year (ciné-café, conferences, tasting evenings, exhibitions, Journées de la Francophonie), one month festival presenting French culture through different disciplines (“Festival Bonjour Brno”) and during November the “Festival du Film Français”.
It is also a point for welcoming French people who just moved to Brno and who need advice.

Role of the volunteer:
The volunteer will closely work with the staff of the Alliance Française (director,
assistant, education/pedagogical coordinator, coordinator for Festival Bonjour Brno, teachers,). We want him/her to feel part of the Alliance Française and to have the possibility to be in contact with all the employees if she/he feels like sharing and communicating with them. At the beginning of her/his stay, she/he will spend 2 weeks observing the work of the staff in order to be well aware of how our Alliance Française runs.

His/her role will be to help us to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, to make students and other visitors feel good at the Alliance Française, to facilitate relationships between students and the organization and to communicate around actions held by the Alliance Française. The volunteer will follow us during the events,
and will partly represent the organization during some fairs and markets (e.g. Gaudeamus Brno). She/he will also have on her/his disposal a desk with a computer at the library, where she/he will work and welcome people.

Volunteer’s activities :
The volunteer will spend
25 hours per week working for the Alliance Française, and 10 hours per week will be organized for the meeting with other volunteers and coordinator, language preparation and preparation of his/her mini-project.

During the working time at the Alliance Française, he/she will be in charge of the library (registration of new readers, classifying books, welcoming students etc.), he/she will create graphic supports for different events and help for the organization of those events. He/she will also be in charge of the communication via Facebook and Instagram profiles and the website of the Alliance Française.

Once per month, she/he will be in charge of the French film club “ciné-café”. We also will be happy when she/he also comes up with her/his own ideas for developing other activities of the Alliance Française.

In the field of pedagogical activities, he/she will also provide help to the education/pedagogical coordinator when organizing these activities for pupils and students.

Last but not least, he/she will also be in charge of daily „routine“ (administration, maintenance of the classrooms, printing documents, distributing flyers and other promotional materials).

The cultural actions all year round are opportunities to strengthen ties with the members of the Alliance Française and the students. We would like the volunteer to participate in all these meetings and gatherings so as she/he could understand how such an organization works from inside and outside. We believe the volunteer can learn a lot from these meetings.

Schedule:
From Monday to Thursday

As said above, the volunteer spends 25 hours per week at the workplace. As our French classes start mostly from 4 PM, the volunteer will be at the workplace from 1PM to 6 PM, from Monday to Thursday. The rest of the time the working time depends on the needs of the activities to be done.

Usually, the volunteer will have all the weekends free. However, sometimes, we organize events in the evenings or during the weekends when we would like him/her to help us. So afterwards, it would be possible for the volunteer to take days off instead of weekend.

Volunteer profiles and recruitment process:

We are looking for a person who is interested in French culture and language and who would like to help to spread a Francophile spirit. For more active participation, it would be better if the volunteer has a certain level of French language. Motivation, autonomy, sense of responsibility and creativity, social media skills (how to use Facebook, Instagram, video etc.) are really important for us. We also welcome his/her openness to cultural and educational activities and his/her willingness to be a source of propositions.

We will select the candidate after reading curriculums and motivation letters (in English and, if possible in French too), and the final decision will be given after a Skype (or a Zoom) interview in French.

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:

  1. What is your idea of the work in a media library and in a cultural center, in general?

  2. What kind of experience do you have in organising cultural events?

  3. In your opinion, how should social media contribute to develop activities of a language and culture centre (like Alliance Française)?

  4. Do you have any experience with working with people (can you specify)?

  5. What kind of activities would you suggest to make French culture closer to the public of Brno?

  6. What are your strong sides and how would you like to share your knowledge and experience with others?

  1. What would you like to gain from your Solidarity corps volunteering project?

General description of volunteering project coordinated by Luzanky:

There are 10 ESC volunteers working at different places on individual projects, meeting every week on common meetings with the coordinator and from time to time with all the colleagues to evaluate and plan the project. Luzanky hosts and coordinates ESC volunteers in other organizations (focused on environmental education, French culture, preschool education etc.). So, all hosted and coordinated volunteers will meet during the project and can visit workplaces and events of each other.

The volunteers are working 5 hours a week together with the coordinator on tasks connected with their integration into Luzanky and presentation of their presence in our organization. Those tasks will be mainly related with promotion of Solidarity corps program, and volunteers stay in Brno. Common trainings organized by Luzanky outside Brno are possible.

Volunteers can visit some of the courses and events organized by Luzanky for free (circus trainings for adults, ceramics, yoga etc.).

The organization will host only volunteers older than 18 years old.

Days off and holidays: volunteers have 2 days a week free + 2 days per month of vacation. While working occasionally on weekends they have extra days off during the week.

Allowances:

Volunteers get their pocket money and food allowance monthly (at the beginning of each month), they are provided with card for Brno public transport.

Accommodation:

Volunteers live in rented flats in single rooms. At the end of the project (August, September) there might be change of accommodation because of administrative reasons.
