Description of the workplaces

This ESC placement consists of work at two different workplaces of Luzanky – centre of leisure time. This means you will work at two different places, each of them focused on slightly different work. But in both cases it is leisure time centre and working with children.

Workplace LUSK (Lidicka – Technical Department)

Lidicka is a branch of Luzanky leisure center situated in the center of Brno in the middle of a large park called Luzanky. It has several departments with different focus (painting, science, drama, yoga, computer science etc.). The volunteer will work in the Department of science:  woodcraft, technic, IT, 3D print, Lego mainstorm.

This department holds regular workshops for children around the age of 5-18. It organizes weekend courses, workshops for adults and also for families with children. Also offers activities for school classes. Provides summer city camps and also summer camps for youngsters.

Lidicka is looking for an STEAM skilled volunteer that would work mainly with children in handcraft classes and aslo IT and digital technology. We expect the volunteer to help us with various workshops and also to be involved in organizing summer camps for children.

We prefer a volunteer who generally likes to work with small children as well as with teenagers and has a positive attitude towards technical issues.

Workplace Liška – centre of leisure time

Liška workplace is located in a smaller town Bílovice nad Svitavou on the outskirts of Brno, surrounded by forests and hills. It is on the railway route to the Moravian Karst, the largest karst area in the Czech Republic. However, it is very easily accessible by transport to the center of Brno, the journey takes less than ten minutes.

The main directions of our activities are sports and tourism, followed by crafts and arts. Our sports activities mostly take place in the surrounding nature and have an environmental impact. For example, we organize the Bílovický hovnivál environmental trail or we have a group focused on speleology and karst. In addition to clubs, camps and events for the public, we also run Minigolf, where educational programs are also held.

We have a large number of other groups, e.g. photo group, electrical workshops, small DIY, Cooking group, rescuers, Parkour, etc. Our specialty is story groups, where children act as their own characters and create a story together throughout the school year. There is also a mini-preschool in the mornings at Liška.

During the school year the volunteer would participate by assisting in the clubs and their preparation (DIY club, cooking club, sports club in nature etc.). The content of the activity will also include the preparation of clubs + one-off events (“Liška nikdy nespí”, neighborhood celebrations, Christmas workshops, Martin’s celebrations, sleepovers and short suburban camps).

The time schedule of the volunteer:

30 hours weekly:

  • 10 hours of work for LUSK (Lidicka – Technical Department): activities, educational programs for schools, help with planning and organizing public events etc.
  • 10 hours of work for Liška – centre of leisure time
  • 2 hours meetings with coordinator and other ESC-ers – time you spent with your ESC coordinator discussing your work and planning the future events, projects etc.

  • Up to 5 hours for your Mini project – time you spend on preparing your own mini project/s

We offer to our volunteers the following kind of support: At each workplace, one of our workers will be your tutor – a guide and adviser who will help you during the whole project. You  will be also provided with all the material of a particular workplace. If you like you can also visit other activities at Lidicka, Liška or in other branches of Luzanky.

General description of volunteering project in Luzanky:

There are 8 ESC volunteers working at different places on individual projects, meeting every week on common meetings with the coordinator and from time to time with all the colleagues to evaluate and plan the project. Luzanky hosts and coordinates ESC volunteers also  in other organizations (focused on environmental education, preschool education  etc.), so all hosted and coordinated volunteers will meet during the project and can visit workplaces and events of each other.

The volunteers work also together with the coordinator on tasks connected with their integration into Luzanky and presentation of their presence in our organization. Those tasks will be mainly related to the promotion of Solidarity corps program.

Volunteers can visit some of the courses and events organized by Luzanky for free (circus training for adults, ceramics etc.).

The organization will host only volunteers older than 18 years old.

Days off and holidays: volunteers have 2 days a week free + 2 days per month of vacation. While working occasionally on weekends they have extra days off during the week.

Allowances: Volunteers get their pocket money and food allowance monthly (at the beginning of each month), and they are provided with a card for Brno public transport.

Accommodation: Volunteers live in rented flats (not in the centre of the city), it can happen that two volunteers will share one room. There will be 4 volunteers in the flat with 3-4 bedrooms. There is no living room, only common space/eating area  in the kitchen. Distance to your working place from the flat can be around 30 minutes by public transport, even a bit more. Getting affordable accommodation in Brno is very difficult in recent years, so please be ready for described conditions of accommodation if you apply to our project. The advantage for you is that you will stay in quite a big city, which offers cultural and other events for young people, some even in English or other languages.
